Welcome to MelsGoal

Important Note:

Opinions are fun. My friends tell me I am someone with lots of opinions and that's fine since I don't get mad at others when they disagree with me. In this same spirit I am interested in hearing yours views as long as you are able to share your views without boiling over. I look forward to hearing from you. I tend to write in the form of short essays most of the time, but contributions do not need to be in this same format or size. Some of the content here will date itself pretty quickly, other content may be virtually timeless, this is for the reader to judge.

What makes America Great?

Posted at: May/17/2012 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Historical Insights, Perspectives, Watching America,

I know, this question has been asked and answered by thousands before me. Nevertheless, I have felt compelled and challenged to write this since I started writing two years ago. This has been confusing for me because every time I felt I knew the answer, I quickly followed that thought with doubt after being dragged in a new direction I did not anticipate. I have a different tact I am going to t.....read more…

Maybe Procrastination isn’t a bad thing

Posted at: May/07/2012 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Behavior, Perspectives,

Nearly everything I have ever read about procrastination talks about how to cure it. While this sounds good, I believe it is actually quite impossible. For me and for all of us there are an infinite number of things we could be doing. In most cases, no matter what you are currently doing, there is likely something else you should be doing instead. Chasing the impossible just doesn’t seem like .....read more…

It is never as simple as “Just an Iceberg”

Posted at: Apr/07/2012 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives,

100 years ago, April of 1912 the ocean liner Titanic sunk while crossing the Atlantic Ocean on her maiden voyage. Within hours of striking an iceberg, the great ship was gone along with 1514 souls. All of us learned this either in school, at the movies, or maybe by watching the history channel.

Disasters are continually plaguing humanity, but some are unique in how the manifest them.....

A case study in how not to run a Galactic Empire, or your team for that matter By Alex Knapp My colleague Dorothy Pomerantz notes that this weekend, the re-issued 3-D version of "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, "pulled down about $23 million at the box office over the weekend. This got my mind to pondering the mistakes that people make, ranging from making the "Star Wars" prequels to reissuin.....read more…

The Voice of Steve Jobs

Posted at: Oct/08/2011 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: People, Perspectives,

For anyone who does not pay attention to the news, Steve Jobs passed away recently after a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer. I never personally met the man, but I feel the loss. There is that twinge you feel when someone very near your own age passes, or maybe it is because of his iconic presence in an industry that is so much a part of all of our lives. Others who have met the man will w.....read more…

The Tea Party, Constitution and a Case of Heartburn

Posted at: Oct/01/2011 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives, Politics & Gov, Watching America,

The other night, after having far too nice a dinner, I awoke at 2:00 AM with a serious case of heartburn. I love going for beer and a burger with friends, but this is almost always the outcome. A meal like that never used to be a problem for me 25 years ago. Initially I tried channel surfing in the idle hope of finding a distraction to my discomfort. The weight loss infomercials did not captu.....read more…

How was your Power Outage?

Posted at: Sep/09/2011 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives,

At 3:37 p.m. on Thursday the 8th, I was sitting at my computer pounding out code. With a sudden little popping noise the lights, my computer, and my last 20 minutes of work all went dark.

Power outages are not new to me; we seem to have one once a year at work that lasts for 20 minutes to an hour. These outages are generally an excuse to gather in someone’s window office and look at.....

Are you ready for the end of the world?

Posted at: May/18/2011 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Common Sense, Perspectives,

Have you heard the news, the end of the world is upon us. Apparently our biblical judgment day is May 21 of 2011, just a few days left to get your personal compass pointed in the right direction. End of days prophets have been around for a while, but they seldom pick a specific day. At the center of all this is Harold Camping who speaks and hosts on Family Radio, a Christian network that is ru.....read more…

What do you want from Government?

Posted at: May/12/2011 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives, Politics & Gov,

Ultimately, as we debate the issues of our national budget, debt, deficit, what we are really saying is “what do you want from government?” All of us as we look at our personal budgets weigh the difference between our desires and our limited financial resources to make choices. Some of our choices are easy, eat out less often, skip the European vacation, etc. Some of the choices are harder, rep.....read more…

PETA and the Bible

Posted at: Apr/23/2011 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives,

As we approach another Easter holiday, the Bible is again in the news. Interpreting the Bible in special and unique ways is a long standing tradition of western culture and institutions. I suppose this is a result of our widely publicized Judaea/Christian belief that the “Bible contains all the answers.” The latest organization to go down this path is the People for the Ethical Treatment of Ani.....read more…
