Welcome to MelsGoal

Important Note:

Opinions are fun. My friends tell me I am someone with lots of opinions and that's fine since I don't get mad at others when they disagree with me. In this same spirit I am interested in hearing yours views as long as you are able to share your views without boiling over. I look forward to hearing from you. I tend to write in the form of short essays most of the time, but contributions do not need to be in this same format or size. Some of the content here will date itself pretty quickly, other content may be virtually timeless, this is for the reader to judge.

The Mean Girls are loose!

It is interesting how words change with time. Growing up I collected stamps because I wanted to do something my father also did. I learned that the postal mark on a stamp meant it had been used and was considered “cancelled.” Of course, for the less nerdy: “canceled” was what happened to television shows you wanted to see, but were not popular enough to come back. A lot of shows I liked got canc.....read more…

25 Cents Worth of Democracy

Talking about sweet reminiscences from some bygone time is not something I often do. The past is seldom as rosy as we would like to remember. Additionally, selective memory is an interesting phenomena that helps us to forget the things we really don’t want to remember. Maybe I am also suffering from the deception of rose colored glasses. Nevertheless, here I am remembering our two political par.....read more…

As 2019 comes to a close it seems only fitting to take a look at the last 11-12 months. We seem to be living in an era of absolutes. Employment is clearly up, average income is definitely stagnate, the one percenters make a tremendous amount more than the rest of us and everyone seems to hate everyone else. Nowhere is absolute merged more completely with hatred than in American politics. The c.....read more…

Where did all the empathy go?

The last decade has been an era of ever increasing political correctness and empathy. Buildings get torn down because they do not have elevators giving handicapped access to high floors. Schools now must provide restrooms for a variety of gender and sexual identifications. Passengers can bring their miniature horse on an airline because it provides them with comfort. Yet, in “politics”, the na.....read more…

It is easy to hate politics

I used to think there was nothing I hated more than the childhood memory of my mother’s terrible attempts at serving liver to us at our Wednesday dinners. With age and a broader experiences in life and people I have come to accept that politics and all its related drama tops my list of hates. Nothing exemplifies the worst of American politics more than the recent Supreme Court nomination hearing .....read more…

What happened to the Supreme Court?

We just completed the very contentious hearings and eventual appointment of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court of the United States. Considering all the mudslinging, political maneuvers and protests, it is amazing that we could ever get anyone appointed to the high court. Yet, more interesting still is that the Congressional fight over the appointment of judges is a fairly resent manifes.....read more…

Imagine a state that passes a law welcoming, coddling and protecting criminals who already have a history of endangering citizens. Next, imagine a state where the State’s Attorney General warns business leaders they will be prosecuted if they work with or provide information to federal authorities. Lastly, imagine that same state passing laws, and judges issuing orders that make no sense except .....read more…

With the election of Donald Trump, the divides in America became ever more apparent. In response to the presidential election of 2016 one group in California circulated a petition supporting the state’s secession from the U.S. While movements like this are hard to take seriously, there are clear divisions in America. In recent decades, the political differences between rural areas and metropolita.....read more…

Thoughts on Veterans Day

We are on the verge of Veteran’s Day and as a veteran it brings to the surface a number of thoughts. During my lifetime I have seen the public perception of veterans, the military and patriotism go through some extreme cycles. There is likely no better time to try and share some insights into these things and hopefully educate or inform just a little, those among us who have never put on a unifo.....read more…

Colleges in America have been special places for a long time. Parents, when first looking at their newborn infant almost immediately establish an aspiration for their children to attend a university at some point in their future. While a college path is not for everyone, there are some key benefits that have traditionally been garnered during the pursuit of a college degree. Among these benefit.....read more…
