Welcome to MelsGoal

Important Note:

Opinions are fun. My friends tell me I am someone with lots of opinions and that's fine since I don't get mad at others when they disagree with me. In this same spirit I am interested in hearing yours views as long as you are able to share your views without boiling over. I look forward to hearing from you. I tend to write in the form of short essays most of the time, but contributions do not need to be in this same format or size. Some of the content here will date itself pretty quickly, other content may be virtually timeless, this is for the reader to judge.

The Ronald Reagan Legacy

Posted at: Feb/06/2011 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Historical Insights,

I know, there has already been a lot written about Ronald Reagan, so why should I say anything? There is no doubt that if you want to do some research on our 40th President, you will find a daunting amount of information. Actually my inspiration is his rapidly approaching 100th birthday, but the reason I am writing is because I feel the need to say something from my own perspective.

Remembering the Shuttle Challenger

Related Category: Historical Insights,

It has been a quarter of a century since the NASA space shuttle Challenger exploded, and to be honest, it still prompts me to tear up a little. A disaster happened that day which became one of those “where were you moments.” Lives were lost, NASA’s luster faded significantly, and our innocence about space exploration and space travel in particular was lost.

On Jan 28 of 1986 the spa.....

World War I is finally over

Posted at: Oct/04/2010 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Historical Insights,

Does the title surprise you, on October 03, 2010 a unified Germany will make the last in a series of war reparation payments to other European countries that has spanned nearly ninety years. Based on the terms and intent of the reparation payments, I guess Germany and the Allies can call it even and “all square." The final payment as reported by the London's Telegraph newspaper is about $93.8 .....read more…

Comparing Lee & Grant

Posted at: Sep/17/2010 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Historical Insights,

Some time ago I read another article in which an author was comparing Generals Grant and Lee during the American Civil war. Of specific interest this author focused on the Overland Campaign of 1864. It seems that everyone who writes about U.S. history eventually takes their shot at this comparison. I am not a professor of history, so my insights may be considered sophomoric, but I repeatedly see .....read more…

Wrapping up 2009

Related Category: Historical Insights,

These things are kind of fun to write. In the theme of fun I will make a best effort at avoiding being verbose.

Change is inevitable, how many times have we heard that…but that is the nature of humanity. We are continually changing our world despite how much we also resist change. Seems like yesterday that we were all worried about Y2K and how our technology driven world would be c.....

Things ain't what they used to be.

Things ain't what they used to be, that sentiment harkens back to a simpler day in which innocence was not met with sarcasm, a man's word was his bond and yadda yadda yadda. How many times have we heard that rant, it’s probably right up there with the “when I was a boy stories” we all get tired of hearing. What a bunch of bull &%#@.

I would really like to know which time period in th.....

Was 1968 a turning point?

Posted at: Apr/09/2009 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Historical Insights,

There is a lot of good material out there on the historical events of 1968 and how critical they were to defining change in America. History is by its very nature a study of the past, so with 40+ years having gone by it is easy to see how many things changed in America and the world during that year. I was only 11 years old at the time so while my father had the evening news on, I honestly did n.....read more…
