Welcome to MelsGoal

Important Note:

Opinions are fun. My friends tell me I am someone with lots of opinions and that's fine since I don't get mad at others when they disagree with me. In this same spirit I am interested in hearing yours views as long as you are able to share your views without boiling over. I look forward to hearing from you. I tend to write in the form of short essays most of the time, but contributions do not need to be in this same format or size. Some of the content here will date itself pretty quickly, other content may be virtually timeless, this is for the reader to judge.

AI Made Me Do It

On our American Independence Day of 2019, a large internet payment processing company decided to lock a friend’s credit card account. Why did they do this? After an hour on the phone, their answer was that there was some suspicious activity on the account. What was this suspicious activity? Well, apparently my friend had spent a couple of hundred dollars in one day. Something she does regularly af.....read more…

The Best Number is

Related Category: My philosophy, Perspectives,

I like to consider myself “well read.” By stating this I believe that I have learned enough in my life to speak intelligently on many subjects. Sometimes I am inspired to correct the liberties taken by some to rewrite history to serve an agenda. Sometimes I write about what I believe to be important political or philosophical observations that seem to have an especially timely meaning. Until t.....read more…

For my son

Related Category: Behavior, My philosophy,

A funny thing happened on the way to college, I guess I should explain in a little more detail. It is high school spring break for one of my sons and we are taking 5 days to visit a number of colleges. Trips like this are expensive, yet they are also priceless. As part of this adventure we have visited a variety of schools taking the canned tours and meeting with their admissions advisors. In .....read more…

Evil needs to make a comeback

Posted at: Jun/11/2013 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Common Sense, My philosophy,

When I was a child life was explained to be about good and bad. All the moral stories of my youth whether cartoon or westerns were fundamentally about the battle of good versus evil. Even my history books referred to everything from slavery to Hitler as evil; now we almost never hear of anything being labeled as evil. With the news filled with war, genocide, murder and deceit I am hard pressed .....read more…

I have too much stuff

Related Category: Behavior, My philosophy, People, Perspectives,

I have too much stuff, I feel kind of embarrassed even saying it. I sure put a lot of energy into accumulating the stuff I have. I would suspect that most people in America do as well. This could be some natural transition from starting out in life with little or nothing at all. Our modern trend toward accumulating stuff may also be just the result of really good marketing and manipulation. Un.....read more…

Hypocrisy at the synagogue

Related Category: My philosophy,

First of all, let me say that fairness counts. I have commented in the past on the Catholic Church and their apparent lack of responsibility in the ever growing child sex abuse scandal. I have commented on the Westboro Baptist Church and their abuse of our constitutional protection of free speech. It is time to open up one of those issues in Judaism that reeks of hypocrisy.

My iss.....

Huck Finn goes PC

Posted at: Jan/05/2011 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: My philosophy,

Have you heard the news, two scholars are editing Mark Twain's classic “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” to eliminate uses of the "N-word” (nigger) and replace it with "slave." Their argument for this is that they want to publish a version that won't be banned from some schools because of its language. This new edition being published by NewSouth Books, will also shorten a fairly detailed and of.....read more…

Do more than Trust Your Gut

Posted at: Dec/07/2010 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: My philosophy,

When faced with a situation that just “does not feel right” we encouraged each other to “Trust Your Gut.” All animals have gut reactions, after all isn’t that what we call instinct. Still, we are human and our text books teach us that being able to reason is part of what sets us apart from other species. Trusting your gut should be the beginning and not the end or our decision making process. .....read more…

Connecting the past to the present

I know, some of this will mean nothing to you if you are under the age of 25. I am going to share a few events both big and small and then try to pull them all together for you.

It was the year 1861, the American Civil War had only just started and the Union Army held control of Fort Monroe in Hampton Virginia at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. In May of that year, Union Major Gen.....

Distractions run amuck

Related Category: My philosophy,

Concentration is defined as giving all of your attention to a subject or — hey wait, I just got an email message. Okay, I'm back. What was I saying? Oh right...something about concentration — a subject that any modern-day technology user knows is in very short supply now. The flipside of concentration is distraction. And in our always-on and always connected environment, we have more o.....read more…
