Welcome to MelsGoal

Important Note:

Opinions are fun. My friends tell me I am someone with lots of opinions and that's fine since I don't get mad at others when they disagree with me. In this same spirit I am interested in hearing yours views as long as you are able to share your views without boiling over. I look forward to hearing from you. I tend to write in the form of short essays most of the time, but contributions do not need to be in this same format or size. Some of the content here will date itself pretty quickly, other content may be virtually timeless, this is for the reader to judge.

Writing isn’t speaking

I’m not a very good speaker. By Toastmaster standards I say “um” too many times and periodically pause to regroup when I lose my train of thought. Nevertheless I accept teaching and speaking challenges often. I wish I were a better speaker and that is probably why I put myself in front of groups. I don’t wish I were a better speaker to the same magnitude that I wish I were a better writer. I.....read more…

Be quiet, I’m thinking

In our modern and Western societies, we often worry about…or even set up protections to ensure certain groups are not overtly abused or trod upon. With the passage of time I have begun to worry that people who are introverted, or display introversion’s related behaviors may soon need our protections. I am not a big fan of lumping people into generalized categories, but for the purposes of this.....read more…

Makers, Takers and a Little Truth

It all began just a few days ago. With the Obama/Romney Presidential race of 2012 in its final 60 days it is still pretty much a dead heat. It is unfortunate, but neither candidate has offered anything positive that you would want to follow. Instead, it has been a campaign of negatives and attacks forcing voters to decide who they dislike the least. It is also an era where there are no secrets.....read more…

I have too much stuff

Related Category: Behavior, My philosophy, People, Perspectives,

I have too much stuff, I feel kind of embarrassed even saying it. I sure put a lot of energy into accumulating the stuff I have. I would suspect that most people in America do as well. This could be some natural transition from starting out in life with little or nothing at all. Our modern trend toward accumulating stuff may also be just the result of really good marketing and manipulation. Un.....read more…

Maybe Procrastination isn’t a bad thing

Posted at: May/07/2012 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Behavior, Perspectives,

Nearly everything I have ever read about procrastination talks about how to cure it. While this sounds good, I believe it is actually quite impossible. For me and for all of us there are an infinite number of things we could be doing. In most cases, no matter what you are currently doing, there is likely something else you should be doing instead. Chasing the impossible just doesn’t seem like .....read more…

What’s wrong with Zero-Tolerance in public schools?

Posted at: Feb/08/2010 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Behavior, Education, Society,

Before I start to rant, I should begin with some background. Zero-Tolerance policies began sweeping the country in 1994 after Congress required states to adopt laws that guaranteed one-year expulsions for any student who brought a firearm to school. By tying federal funding to compliance with the Congressional mandate, all 50 states rapidly adopted similar laws. Public policy towards childr.....read more…
