Welcome to MelsGoal

Important Note:

Opinions are fun. My friends tell me I am someone with lots of opinions and that's fine since I don't get mad at others when they disagree with me. In this same spirit I am interested in hearing yours views as long as you are able to share your views without boiling over. I look forward to hearing from you. I tend to write in the form of short essays most of the time, but contributions do not need to be in this same format or size. Some of the content here will date itself pretty quickly, other content may be virtually timeless, this is for the reader to judge.

In case you had not heard, one of the last acts by outgoing U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta was the announcement of the creation of a new medal now available to members of our armed services. To be eligible for this award, military service members must have done something significant while operating drones or launching cyber-attacks against our enemies. This new medal is called the “Distingu.....read more…

The Dow at a record high…?

Posted at: Mar/07/2013 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Economics, Perspectives,

Did you hear the news? The Dow Jones Industrial Average (aka the Dow) closed today at a record high of 14,254, easily blowing past the previous record set in October of 2007 at 14,198. After the 2007 peak, the Dow plummeted 54% for the next 18 months, finding a bottom in March of 2009 at 6,547. I would like to say that I feel real good about this news, heck…numbers don’t lie; Unfortunately, some.....read more…

What happened to the signature?

In our modern era of digital everything, it is difficult for anything to stay pertinent. The LP (Long Play Record) is considered a collectible. The clutch and standard transmission are becoming custom options at your car dealership. A television with any front panel controls can now only be found at a thrift store. Personally, I am glad that the polyester leisure suit has faded to novelty, but w.....read more…

Makers, Takers and a Little Truth

It all began just a few days ago. With the Obama/Romney Presidential race of 2012 in its final 60 days it is still pretty much a dead heat. It is unfortunate, but neither candidate has offered anything positive that you would want to follow. Instead, it has been a campaign of negatives and attacks forcing voters to decide who they dislike the least. It is also an era where there are no secrets.....read more…

Why are lists fascinating?

Posted at: Aug/27/2012 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: People, Perspectives,

Have you ever wondered why we are so fascinated by lists of things? We love those lists that countdown to “number one.” David Letterman has his daily list of top ten something’s. Television’s Animal Planet always does well with its list based programs; ten weirdest animals, ten most unique insect relationships, etc. Time magazine list of “The world’s Top 100 Most Influential People” is always a.....read more…

If you have followed any of the news about the London 2012 Olympics, you have likely heard of Oscar Pistorius. Oscar was born with missing fibulas (the outer leg bones). As a result of his condition, both of his legs were amputated below the knees as a baby. Despite this condition, Oscar has risen to become a noted sprinter in the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes. He accomplishes these feats of r.....read more…

The fading of Amateurs from the Olympics

If you are a person who likes quiet places, the Olympics are probably not going to be one of your travel destinations. Even if you watch the various sporting events from the comfort of your living room, there is still plenty of opportunity to cheer and make noise. Despite all this, one of the most significant events of the modern Olympics history took place with little more than a yawn to acknow.....read more…

Why I can’t stop watching the Andy Griffith show

Posted at: Jul/11/2012 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives,

A few days ago, July 3 of 2012 to be specific Andy Griffith passed away at age 86. I am not going to eulogize him here. Some actors are remembered for the skill and character they bring to a role. These performances lead you to feel the role could not have been done as well by anyone else. In other cases, we remember an actor more for the project they were associated with and its timeless valu.....read more…

When my oldest son was still in those single digit years we enrolled him in a performing arts school. I remember attending one of his schools performance recitals where my son had to do a jazz dance routine before all the other students and their parents. I still recall that for being a performing arts school, almost everyone was pretty bad at what they did in their performances. It was entert.....read more…

I have too much stuff

I have too much stuff, I feel kind of embarrassed even saying it. I sure put a lot of energy into accumulating the stuff I have. I would suspect that most people in America do as well. This could be some natural transition from starting out in life with little or nothing at all. Our modern trend toward accumulating stuff may also be just the result of really good marketing and manipulation. Un.....read more…
