Welcome to MelsGoal

Important Note:

Opinions are fun. My friends tell me I am someone with lots of opinions and that's fine since I don't get mad at others when they disagree with me. In this same spirit I am interested in hearing yours views as long as you are able to share your views without boiling over. I look forward to hearing from you. I tend to write in the form of short essays most of the time, but contributions do not need to be in this same format or size. Some of the content here will date itself pretty quickly, other content may be virtually timeless, this is for the reader to judge.

Barack Obama and the Nobel Prize for Peace

Posted at: Oct/15/2009 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives,

It was recently announced that President Barack Obama had been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. This announcement sparked criticism, controversy and praise. I have mixed feeling on the award and will try to unload my thoughts with some direction and hope they lead to a conclusion.

"Alfred Nobel wrote that the prize should go to the person who has contributed most to the developmen.....

Remembering Walter Cronkite

Posted at: Jul/19/2009 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives,

There have been a number of notable people who have passed on in the last few weeks. I am not big on glorifying or memorializing entertainment personalities, but Walter Cronkite was much more than that to me.

The evening news we have now is a great deal different than what was broadcast 30 years ago. The so-called production value of modern news broadcasts is substantially better th.....

Why rebuild New Orleans?

Posted at: Jul/08/2009 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives,

After the destruction caused by hurricane Katrina in late August of 2005 there has been a lot of debate on rebuilding New Orleans. As of this writing we are nearing the fourth anniversary of the hurricane, and there is still a lot of reconstruction left. There have been many articles on what makes New Orleans special and why or why not to rebuild. It seem time for me to congeal a few thoughts o.....read more…

The value of Torture

Posted at: Jun/23/2009 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives,

First of all I need to be clear, I am not an expert on torture and while I like to expand my knowledge base… I am quite comfortable in my bliss with respect to this skill set. The debate on the use of torture by American’s for the sake of our security has been a very heated debate for most of the past 8 years (since September 11th, 2001).

On September 11, 2001 I was getting ready for.....

Let’s talk about lying

Posted at: May/25/2009 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives,

Is this a strange subject? Actually, I’m pretty proud that I have sat down to write a little on this. I know, we all grew up being told lying is wrong, that is pretty absolute so there should not be much of anything to say. The older I get the less I believe in absolutes.

As a parent I am tasked with a variety of roles, supervisor, teacher, mentor, philosopher, disciplinarian, ex.....

You’re terrible at writing!

Posted at: May/07/2009 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives,

You’re terrible at writing! Is this something you’ve been told? I sure heard it a lot. I still remember my school years and the pain and suffering I went through in English class. Punctuation mystified me, I never could spell, and diagramming a sentence was just plain old punishment. Sometimes I wonder how I ever managed to graduate high school. Math, science, and PE, those were my classes. .....read more…

What to do about Piracy

Posted at: May/04/2009 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives,

Piracy is back and it is in the news. Actually, that is only half right; Piracy is in the news, but it can’t be back because it never really went away. The recent acts of piracy in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia have created quite a bit of news. These acts of piracy aren’t really a resurgence of something lost to the history books, they are actually just the most notable set of piracy.....read more…

Free Will and your Destiny?

Posted at: Apr/13/2009 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Perspectives,

This is one of those great debates in philosophy. Since I am doing the writing I get to expound on my view. Your understanding of these concepts, personal beliefs, and your personal philosophy in this view will have a great deal to do with how your life unfolds. Still, your personal philosophy is "your" personal philosophy.

No real discussion on this theme can proceed without throw.....
