Important Note:
Opinions are fun. My friends tell me I am someone with lots of opinions and that's fine since I don't get mad at others when they disagree with me. In this same spirit I am interested in hearing yours views as long as you are able to share your views without boiling over. I look forward to hearing from you. I tend to write in the form of short essays most of the time, but contributions do not need to be in this same format or size. Some of the content here will date itself pretty quickly, other content may be virtually timeless, this is for the reader to judge.

I know I am dating myself, but I would like to briefly reflect on the apparent passing of an old friend. Growing up in the 1960’s and 70’s one of my memories was racing to my best friend’s house every Thursday afternoon to see who was on the cover of the latest edition of Sports Illustrated (SI). Each new week was filled with glossy photographs and what I considered exciting writing. Sports Illu.....read more…

Asked to define the word “woman” during her Supreme Court confirmation hearing in 2022, Judge Ketanji Jackson avoided a direct answer by saying “I’m not a biologist.” I am not a biologist either, but I think I can help with this question. To that end, let me rephrase the question to Judge Jackson: are sex categories in humans of "male and female" real, immutable, and binary, or are they merely “so.....read more…
Is it really a sport?

It is February 2014 and the Winter Olympics hosted in Sochi Russia are underway. Thanks to the miracle of television and the internet I get to enjoy watching the competition in a variety of events. Some of the events I have enjoyed to this point include Speed Skating, Snowboarding, Cross-Country skiing, 2-Man Bobsledding, Ice Hockey and Super-G. As a lover of sports and competition I have to ad.....read more…

I have never been very good at that spare time thing. If I am not working or sleeping, I am probably doing something for youth soccer or attempting a long overdue home project. Sunday, January 5th, 2014 was a rare event for me as I watched most of one football game and part of another. I was not an overt fan of any of the teams playing that day, it just became part of my afternoon. In truth, I .....read more…

Youth sports are big in my life. I got into soccer with my oldest son and have spent the last 13 years seeing the best and worst of what youth sports can produce. Over the years I have watched kids grow into adults and go from chasing butterflies, to creating phenomenal strategic attacks and brilliant goal scoring plays. These young people have learned the satisfaction of athletic endeavor, the.....read more…

It’s April and the start of another baseball season. As with any new baseball season we are inundated with the predictions by experts; who’ll win the divisions, the pennants and ultimately the World Series? I am a big fan of history and through history I have learned these predictions by experts will not go away, and that they are invariably wrong….How do these guys get away with being perceived .....read more…

If you have followed any of the news about the London 2012 Olympics, you have likely heard of Oscar Pistorius. Oscar was born with missing fibulas (the outer leg bones). As a result of his condition, both of his legs were amputated below the knees as a baby. Despite this condition, Oscar has risen to become a noted sprinter in the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes. He accomplishes these feats of r.....read more…
The fading of Amateurs from the Olympics

If you are a person who likes quiet places, the Olympics are probably not going to be one of your travel destinations. Even if you watch the various sporting events from the comfort of your living room, there is still plenty of opportunity to cheer and make noise. Despite all this, one of the most significant events of the modern Olympics history took place with little more than a yawn to acknow.....read more…

Did you follow the news this last weekend? June 9th, 2012 was the 144th running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in New York. This is the historic third jewel of the American horse racing’s Triple Crown. This year’s race had more buzz than normal because “I’ll Have Another” was looking to become the first Triple Crown winner since “Affirmed” in 1978 having won at the Kentucky Derby and the.....read more…
How much is an Amateur Athlete worth?

It has happened again, another college football star (Cam Newton of Auburn) is under investigation for allegedly being paid to play or receiving money to choose their school. Not too long ago Reggie Bush was investigated and ultimately found to have benefited while playing at USC some years ago. There are some important questions that need to be asked here, but it should also be noted that speed .....read more…
