Welcome to MelsGoal

Important Note:

Opinions are fun. My friends tell me I am someone with lots of opinions and that's fine since I don't get mad at others when they disagree with me. In this same spirit I am interested in hearing yours views as long as you are able to share your views without boiling over. I look forward to hearing from you. I tend to write in the form of short essays most of the time, but contributions do not need to be in this same format or size. Some of the content here will date itself pretty quickly, other content may be virtually timeless, this is for the reader to judge.

The trust fund myth!

Posted at: Feb/08/2011 : Posted by: mel

I am here to tell you that the Social Security “Trust Fund” is an illusion. Did I say something wrong? This essay is not meant to scare you; this is meant to educate you. Social Security is most likely the largest single federal program that there is. I am not sure if basing a program of this scale on an illusionary title is good governmental policy, or just accidently misleading, others can d.....read more…

The 112th Congress

Related Category: Politics & Gov,

It is January 2011, and the Republicans in Congress are entitled to a bit of gloating as they settle into their new positions of power and get down to work. With the election behind them the Republican Party now holds a majority in the house and therefore also heads all the major committees. The GOP also made inroads in the Senate though they do not hold a majority. They said the voters made this .....read more…

If you have followed any news recently, you have heard the term WikiLeaks. WikiLeaks is a website and an organization that disseminates what would otherwise be considered secrets either by businesses, organizations, or governments. The most recent release by WikiLeaks is a cascade of diplomatic cables that share those untold things publically that many have thought, but few have been willing to .....read more…

Don’t ask, don’t tell…don’t care

Don't ask, don't tell is the term used to describe the policy restricting the United States military from asking too many questions with respect to a service member’s sexual preferences or behavior. The policy was introduced as a compromise measure by then President Clinton in 1993. The policy was introduced in response to a Clinton campaign promise to allow all citizens, regardless of sexual or.....read more…

What Went Wrong?

Related Category: Politics & Gov,

We are one day away from the 2010 midterm elections and they are more contested than virtually any midterm elections I can remember. You might even ask; “Why write about this…it will be history tomorrow evening?” There is no doubt that by tomorrow evening this election will be in the books so to speak, but history has a way of repeating itself. I think it is fundamentally important to look, s.....read more…

We are on the verge of the 2010 mid-term elections and of course, the rhetoric is just about as nasty has it has ever been. Of equal note is that this election is inspiring a great deal of water cool discussion and in some cases even heated debate. I have never backed away from a good political discuss, nor do I lack for opinions so I have found myself in the middle of a few of these. I don’t m.....read more…

A divisive election season with lots of extreme rhetoric and mudslinging politics always seems to stir of fantasies of a new, moderate, centrist and sensible political party, but third parties just don’t do well at catching on in the U.S.

I guess it was inevitable. This 2010 mid-term election season has been one of the worst I can recall in my many decades as an avid voting participan.....

The need for Public Sector Pay & Pension Reform

Let me set the table. It is the summer of 2010 and we have been in a recession for 20-24 months. Our financial system is rebuilding itself slowly after 15-20 years of unregulated greed at the expense of declining “financial service”. Anytime the tide is really low you get to see all the trash that has accumulated just beyond the beach. In a similar manner, that is where we are now. During the.....read more…

Are you confused, that’s alright…I have had this notion in my head for weeks and only just had it congeal into a more or less logical thought. Bear with me on this, what I am really talking about is the age old challenge of providing public safety and security. Let me be clear, “Attribution” means that when someone does something bad we can attribute it to them.

Why the emphasis on .....

Do we need Term-Limits?

Posted at: Jun/09/2010 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Politics & Gov,

In this day and age of political frustration Term Limits regularly boils to the top of public debate. I have mixed feeling about the entire matter and on a fundamental basis view term limits as ridiculous. Think about it, term limits are intended to force regular replacement of “elected officials”. If these people are elected, can’t we get rid of them any time we want by simply voting them out?.....read more…
