Welcome to MelsGoal

Important Note:

Opinions are fun. My friends tell me I am someone with lots of opinions and that's fine since I don't get mad at others when they disagree with me. In this same spirit I am interested in hearing yours views as long as you are able to share your views without boiling over. I look forward to hearing from you. I tend to write in the form of short essays most of the time, but contributions do not need to be in this same format or size. Some of the content here will date itself pretty quickly, other content may be virtually timeless, this is for the reader to judge.

It has been 8 months since the 2020 elections and the entire process of elections is still in the news. There is talk that the election was stolen, and others who worry about the opportunity for fraud. On the other side of the table is a valid concern that elections be accessible and not disenfranchise any distinct group of voters. These are all important questions since our democracy is depende.....read more…

In case you missed it, President Biden just finished his first 100 days in the oval office. This milestone is normally scrutinized by the press and pundits. Agenda is analyzed along with executive orders and public appearances. For most of the last 30 years new Presidents have used this window to promote their agenda and begin securing their legacy. I am an individual with a lot of opinions, I know this to be true because I get told it so many times I have almost become deaf to the comment. I used to think that being opinionated was a privilege of being old, but clearly in our current society that is not reserved to folks my generation. Nevertheless, if there was every an opportunity to share a few unwanted and unsolicited opinions, the pol.....read more…

25 Cents Worth of Democracy

Talking about sweet reminiscences from some bygone time is not something I often do. The past is seldom as rosy as we would like to remember. Additionally, selective memory is an interesting phenomena that helps us to forget the things we really don’t want to remember. Maybe I am also suffering from the deception of rose colored glasses. Nevertheless, here I am remembering our two political par.....read more…

The Tragedy of Impeachment

As 2019 comes to a close it seems only fitting to take a look at the last 11-12 months. We seem to be living in an era of absolutes. Employment is clearly up, average income is definitely stagnate, the one percenters make a tremendous amount more than the rest of us and everyone seems to hate everyone else. Nowhere is absolute merged more completely with hatred than in American politics. The c.....read more…

If you are a California resident, 2019 has been one heck of a year. The homeless populations of San Francisco and Los Angeles have repeatedly made the national news. We can no longer get plastic straws with our cancer causing soda. But more prominent in our minds is the 2019 fire season. Any of us who have lived here a while have seen these fires, and on occasion been personally impacted. It .....read more…

Where did all the empathy go?

The last decade has been an era of ever increasing political correctness and empathy. Buildings get torn down because they do not have elevators giving handicapped access to high floors. Schools now must provide restrooms for a variety of gender and sexual identifications. Passengers can bring their miniature horse on an airline because it provides them with comfort. Yet, in “politics”, the na.....read more…

It is easy to hate politics

I used to think there was nothing I hated more than the childhood memory of my mother’s terrible attempts at serving liver to us at our Wednesday dinners. With age and a broader experiences in life and people I have come to accept that politics and all its related drama tops my list of hates. Nothing exemplifies the worst of American politics more than the recent Supreme Court nomination hearing .....read more…

What happened to the Supreme Court?

We just completed the very contentious hearings and eventual appointment of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court of the United States. Considering all the mudslinging, political maneuvers and protests, it is amazing that we could ever get anyone appointed to the high court. Yet, more interesting still is that the Congressional fight over the appointment of judges is a fairly resent manifes.....read more…

With the election of Donald Trump, the divides in America became ever more apparent. In response to the presidential election of 2016 one group in California circulated a petition supporting the state’s secession from the U.S. While movements like this are hard to take seriously, there are clear divisions in America. In recent decades, the political differences between rural areas and metropolita.....read more…
