Welcome to MelsGoal

Important Note:

Opinions are fun. My friends tell me I am someone with lots of opinions and that's fine since I don't get mad at others when they disagree with me. In this same spirit I am interested in hearing yours views as long as you are able to share your views without boiling over. I look forward to hearing from you. I tend to write in the form of short essays most of the time, but contributions do not need to be in this same format or size. Some of the content here will date itself pretty quickly, other content may be virtually timeless, this is for the reader to judge.

How do you judge income inequality?

I don’t consider myself a news junkie, but I do read a lot. Some of my reading is for entertainment, some is for education. I like to think I can hold an intelligent conversation with just about anyone on a broad range of topics. To fulfill this personal mission takes a lot of reading on current events. One of the most common practices in our media today is the use of statistics. Numbers and .....read more…

For my kids the use of social networking tools like Facebook have become common place. Many young people have grown up with this technology concurrently sharing all aspects of their life on their public walls. The entries can be announcements of events and career changes to details that inform the world of what movie they will be going to see in the next 10 minutes and their rating of the person.....read more…

Youth sports are big in my life. I got into soccer with my oldest son and have spent the last 13 years seeing the best and worst of what youth sports can produce. Over the years I have watched kids grow into adults and go from chasing butterflies, to creating phenomenal strategic attacks and brilliant goal scoring plays. These young people have learned the satisfaction of athletic endeavor, the.....read more…

Not all Anti-Muslim’s are created equal

In recent months there have been two significant terror attacks by Islamic extremists in two different western democracies. Despite the similarities in extremist hatred with both attacks, that’s where their commonality ends. The public response to the bombings in Boston at its namesake marathon on April 15 and the attack on a British soldier on a London street on May 22 exemplify the differences .....read more…

Finding humanity in the midst war

Posted at: Mar/14/2013 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Behavior, Historical Insights, People,

As a member of the baby-boomer generation, many of the parents of my childhood friends were either WWII or Korean War veterans. I remember seeing in many homes the framed pictures of young men standing in front of their aircraft, or knelling in the mud with the rifles at hand. As a kid, seeing these pictures or the framed medals always prompted questions and awe. My questions were most often an.....read more…

Writing isn’t speaking

Posted at: Jan/23/2013 : Posted by: mel

Related Category: Behavior, People, Society,

I’m not a very good speaker. By Toastmaster standards I say “um” too many times and periodically pause to regroup when I lose my train of thought. Nevertheless I accept teaching and speaking challenges often. I wish I were a better speaker and that is probably why I put myself in front of groups. I don’t wish I were a better speaker to the same magnitude that I wish I were a better writer. I.....read more…

What happened to the signature?

In our modern era of digital everything, it is difficult for anything to stay pertinent. The LP (Long Play Record) is considered a collectible. The clutch and standard transmission are becoming custom options at your car dealership. A television with any front panel controls can now only be found at a thrift store. Personally, I am glad that the polyester leisure suit has faded to novelty, but w.....read more…

Be quiet, I’m thinking

In our modern and Western societies, we often worry about…or even set up protections to ensure certain groups are not overtly abused or trod upon. With the passage of time I have begun to worry that people who are introverted, or display introversion’s related behaviors may soon need our protections. I am not a big fan of lumping people into generalized categories, but for the purposes of this.....read more…

The Pulpit and Free Speech?

Did you hear that, October 7, 2012 was designated at Pulpit Freedom Day? This is a day when hundreds of pastors were expected to openly violate the law of the land and preach politics or endorse political candidates from their respective pulpits. Technically the law they intend to violate is the Johnson Amendment, enacted in 1954. Sponsored by then Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, this law limits the.....read more…
